Arrived early and had a quick net. As the net finished, I heard those dreaded three words. ‘You are opening’. This time I asked why.
‘Well you are the only one padded up’.
‘Did you see me practising’ I asked?
We start in two minutes. Someone’s got to do it.
I was out for 11. I was going well. What excuse can I roll out this time? My batting partner was sitting on the strike. When I had the strike, I took a single or hit a boundary. He played recklessly, played and missed and miss hit for 6 overs from the left arm tyro opening the attack for Marlborough. He eventually started to hit the balls he’d previously missed but maddeningly took singles at the end of every over. As we ran he apologised, several times. It wasn’t deliberate.
When he got out, the next batter stole a few singles at the end of three consecutive overs. I knew what was coming next. I just knew I would get a jaffa. I was proved right wasn’t when I was bowled playing down the wrong line. It was ball three of the twelfth over. Only the third I’d faced from their danger bowler.
