Got a last minute call up. Normally means ‘MM’ doesn’t rate you but he’s short on bodies so anyone will do. I played this game last year. I was going well till I was run out that day. Has the ’MM’ forgotten? I scored three and fielded like a dope today. Not a good day.
Fenner’s is not a picturesque ground. Some bright spark- vandal really- thought it was a good idea to tear down a century old Victorian pavilion and replace with a rubbish red brick modernist rectangle. Worse still are the new halls of residence built around the ground. They too are red brick; not what you want when the ball’s red is it?
The wicket was dry and abrasive. The ball loses its shine quickly. You have to be slightly potty to grumble about Fenner’s though. It’s is a first class ground. If it was good enough for Dexter, Ranjitsinjhi, AR Lewis, Trevor Bailey, JJ Warr and Robin Marlar, Gubby Allen, Freddie Brown,Yardley ,Duleepsinhji, Peter May David Sheppard, Tony Lewis, Mike Brearley, Mike Atherton, Majid Khan, Phil Edmonds, Mike Selvey and Derek Pringle, who am I to grumble?
