v Beckenham CC

Scored 2 boundaries of a 13 year old boy and then got out; a top edge. What a waste of time.

Got a phone call from a distressed Captain.

‘We’re several short, know anyone who wants a game?

Run out on 8. I was a victim of another terrible umpiring decision. It was ever thus; bloody umpires!

v Secretary’s XI, the Close

This is a new fixture in this cricket week. The secretary is kind of a parole officer for the ex patients of this school. His is an arduous job. His progress around the country and world is an onerous one. In any year he must visit places like New York, Kuala Lumpur, Paris, Accra, Toronto, Cape Town, Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore, Hong Kong, Aden, Cairo and forced to enjoy the hospitality of alumni branch dinners.

v Cryptics CC, the Close

Waited all year for this day. I use to sit in an east London office and stare out the window at a tower bloc named after Sir Stafford Cripps. As tower blocs go, it wasn’t too bleak but if I looked long and hard enough, I could see the Close emerging out of the brickwork. I wasn’t on anything. It was the job. It was hallucinatory at all times.

v Sutton CC

Eminently forgettable cricket on a drizzly day is washed down by bottles cheap claret and fat lunch. Grill included Pork with crackling, chicken, cumberlands, breaded potato squares, salad, bread rolls and soup. The pudding is a bit weak though; stodgy supermarket cake.

v Bradfield Waifs,

Bradfield again, a 2 day game against the Waifs. Amateur cricketers seldom play two day cricket anymore so when the chance comes up diehards jump on it. Not a single ball was bowled. Two days of hellish rain.
