A 2 day game, 2 innings and god blessed Berkshire with 2 days of sun. First innings was abject. I edged two 4’s through the slips and finally guided one to the keeper’s gloves. This is personal. This game is telling me something.

I played here for the school XI when I was 15. I mention that with some pride but the truth is that half the team were ill or had exams so the last fit cricketer in the school got picked. We travelled up the night before. I got totally pissed and threw up in the middle of the night….

Arrived early and had a quick net. As the net finished, I heard those dreaded three words. ‘You are opening’. This time I asked why.

‘Well you are the only one padded up’.

‘Did you see me practising’ I asked?

We start in two minutes. Someone’s got to do it.

I was out for 11. I was going well.

Cricket was easy again today. Well it felt easy for one or two boundaries. I was out for 29 but boy it felt like 192 at times.

I turned out for a Schoolmaster’s XI against a bloody awful bowling attack. It was so bad that I scored 70 odd runs and retired 30 short of my hundred. A hundred spurned…..
